Morning Suprise

posted by Prairie Wind Alpacas    |   June 29, 2013 09:58

Our long weekend has started out great- Bianca had a healthy baby boy this morning.
We went out to do morning chores and she was in the pasture delivering. By the time we returned with the birthing kit the cria was on the ground!

Got closer and he sat up!
Once the sun comes out the alpacas love to lay and sun themselves.

Yesterday Rita and her cria went back into the pasture with the rest of the females - who were all very curious about their newest pen mate!

Luckily All Are Well

It wasn't the smoothest of births today. This is Rita's 8th cria and she has delivered all her cria with no issues. We noticed that Rita was in labour at 10 this morning. By 1:00 her labour hadn't progressed so we called the vet. The vet came and found that instead of coming head and front feet first the crias head was facing backwards (it's neck was turn back) and its front feet were going backwards. It took the vet 20 minutes to reposition the cria into a position that he could get it out, and he was doubtful that it would survive. As soon as the cria was out it look a deep breath and so did we - it survived!
